The Arsenal Foundation helped to fund a summer camp at Amberliegh, a local charity that educates the public in art and science. Akunna Nwanna-Skeete tells us how the money helped children have fun – for free.
“We were looking for donations to help fund our summer holiday club at The Chestnuts Community Centre in Highbury, which we wanted to be free for disadvantaged children and young people of all abilities. Our aim was to open for three full days a week for four weeks during the summer holidays for up to 40 eight to 15-year-olds.
“We had volunteers lined up and ready to go: three young people aged 16 and 17 who had previously attended our regular classes, and three returning young people aged 18 to 20 to lead on sports activities and supervise basic cooking activities at the centre. We also planned arts and craft activities such as pottery and basket making, as well as group activities such as team games and off-site trips to places like the local play and adventure parks and the summer sporting programmes delivered by Islington Council.
“Thankfully, The Arsenal Foundation generously donated the full amount we applied for to pay the student workers, and the summer camp was a huge success.
“One of our most important achievements was to give the youngsters an opportunity to strengthen friendships and to form new bonds. We wanted to ensure that both the attendees and the young workers enjoyed their experiences and learned new things. The young workers were once attendees of our projects and some currently volunteer at our other projects, so the children were familiar with all the young staff. We also had a young worker with additional needs, which ensured inclusivity and also demonstrated how determination and drive proves you can do anything you put your mind to.
“All of the youngsters engaged in and contributed to the activities. They were imaginative, versatile and productive. And the camp was of huge benefit to families on low income, who could send their children to a summer scheme without the added burden of having to try to fund their place.
“From an organiser’s point of view, it is always fun arranging activities and trips for the young people, and even more joyous to see their smiling faces as they take part in the activity. It is so rewarding.
“The parents were happy too. In the words of one, ‘Amberliegh Kids Summer Club has been an absolute game changer for my daughter. From the moment she joined, I noticed a remarkable shift in her confidence and outlook on life. The club provided a nurturing and supportive environment that allowed her to come out of her shell and interact more freely with her peers.
“‘Amberliegh Kids is more than just a summer club – it’s a place where children learn life skills, gain confidence and form lasting friendships. I’m so grateful for the impact it’s had on her, and I highly recommend Amberliegh Kids.’
“One final highlight was a visit to Arsenal for a stadium tour. Everyone who attended it enjoyed the day enormously, and it wouldn’t have happened without the support of The Arsenal Foundation.”
