In a thrilling conclusion to our Premier League Cup group stage, we clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory on the road against Derby County.
From the kickoff, our high-pressing game plan paid off early. A misplaced pass by Derby's keeper fell into our hands, and our captain, Harrison Dudziak, calmly slotted the ball home, putting us in the lead just ten minutes into the match.
Throughout the first half, we maintained control, dominating second balls and looking poised to extend our lead. However, Derby County levelled the score against the run of play just before halftime. Dajaune Brown dribbled past two defenders to unleash a powerful shot across the goal, bringing the Rams back on level terms.
After the break, the game turned into a scrappy affair with numerous challenges and interruptions disrupting the flow of our play.
Despite the challenges, we relentlessly pressed for a late winner, coming close on two occasions. Substitute Ismeal Kabia unleashed a long-range effort just over the bar after a keeper clearance, and Ayden Heaven surged through the midfield into the box, but his attempt narrowly missed the target.
Our persistence paid off in the dying moments of the game. In the third minute of injury time, Heaven played a crucial role in setting up Kabia, whose shot fortuitously deflected in our favour, finding the back of the net. The bench erupted in jubilation as we secured a well-deserved late winner.
This victory marked a triumphant return for Kabia, making his first competitive appearance of the season after recovering from injury. The three points earned are pivotal as we strive to advance from our group in the Premier League Cup.
WHAT IT MEANS
This thrilling late victory propels us to the top of our group with 7 points, edging past West Ham. However, the Hammers have one more match against Middlesbrough. If they stumble, our path to the knockout stages is secured.
In the event of a West Ham triumph, our hopes hinge on qualifying as the best runner-up.
WHATβS NEXT
Up next, our Under-18s shift their focus to FA Youth Cup action. We're set to host Crewe Alexandra in the third round, with fixture details to be confirmed soon.
