Arsenal Ladies completed an incredible second-half comeback to beat Bristol Academy 4-3 on Saturday.
Bristol got off to the best possible start when Matthews scored in the opening minute, and it got better for the hosts when Nikki Watts doubled their lead from the penalty spot before half-time.
Kelly Smith was introduced at the break and immediately made her mark on the game, scoring twice within five minutes of being on the pitch to level the score.
And then Alex Scott completed the comeback after being found by Jordan Nobbs, before Smith fired home to secure her hat-trick.
Bristol did score again, but Natalia Pablo Sanchon’s goal would only serve as a consolation on an evening where Smith showed why, at 35, she is still at the top of her game.
