International round-up: Kiwior scores first goal

Jakub Kiwior celebrates scoring for Poland against Germany

Jakub Kiwior netted his first international goal to help Poland to a 1-0 win over Germany on Friday night.

The teams were in friendly action in Warsaw with the Germans already assured a spot at Euro 2024 as hosts, but Poland warmed up for their upcoming qualifier against Moldova with an impressive win against their neighbours.

The key moment came on 31 minutes when Jakub rose highest to head a corner towards goal, and the bounce deceived Marc-Andre ter Stegen to find the net. Jakub would play the full 90 minutes as his nation recorded an eye-catching victory.

On Monday night Bukayo Saka could start once again for England against North Macedonia as they look to make it four wins from four in qualifying, having featured for the first 45 minutes of their 4-0 victory against Malta on Friday. He played a key role in the Three Lions’ opening goal when he burst into space and forced Ferdinando Apap to turn his cross into his own net to kick-start the convincing win in Valletta, where Aaron Ramsdale remained on the bench.

On the same night, Granit Xhaka’s Switzerland managed to record a slender 2-1 win against Andorra to stay o top of their group, with our midfielder skippering his nation for the full 90 minutes. That also meant they kept their 100 per cent record intact heading into Monday’s home meeting with Romania, who sit just two points behind them.

Martin Odegaard playing for Norway against Scotland

Saturday saw Kieran Tierney’s Scotland get the better of Martin Odegaard’s Norway in Oslo via a 2-1 scoreline and see them remain in top spot with three wins from three. It looked like Martin’s side were on course to get the points when Erling Haaland tucked away a penalty on 61 minutes, but two late goals from Lyndon Dykes and Kenny McLean saw the Scots triumph.

Kieran impressed during his 65 minutes on the field, while Martin featured for all 90. The result means Norway have taken just one point from their first three games and have played one game more than their nearest rivals for second spot.

Two of our goalkeepers also saw their hopes of reaching the finals take a hit as Karl Hein featured in Estonia’s 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan, while Alex Runarsson’s Iceland fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Slovakia.

Away from Euro 2024 qualifying action, Jorginho was an unused sub as Italy claimed third place in the UEFA Nations League by beating the Netherlands 3-2, while Thomas Partey’s Ghana remain top of their AFCON qualifying group despite drawing 0-0 at Madagascar.

Thomas played the full 90 minutes in Antananarivo, and the result means a win in their final group game against the Central African Republic will be enough to book their spot at the tournament in the Ivory Coast next January.
