Martinelli – ‘We have to improve’

Gabriel Martinelli has said the team need to learn the lessons of our draw against Aston Villa on Saturday.

We had to settle for just one point at Emirates Stadium, despite taking a two-goal lead. It was Martinelli who fired us ahead, turning Leandro Trossard’s cross just over the line in the first-half. Kai Havertz later made it 2-0, but the visitors hit back to deny us the win.

“It’s a disappointing day for us,” Martinelli said afterwards. “We wanted to come here to win the game. We didn't. That's football. That's the Premier League. We'll have to rewatch the game and see what we did wrong and try to improve for the next one.”

The Brazilian got us off to a great start with his seventh goal of the season, with a shot which only just squeezed over the line, and awarded after goal-line technology was used.

“Yeah, it was an amazing cross from Leo, to be fair I thought the ball wasn't in, but luckily the ref gave us the goal but yeah, they were two-nil down and they drew the game. But it happens, that's the Premier League. We have to take it and try to improve it for the next games.”

This was our sixth game of an already hectic January schedule, with three more to come this month. But despite the busy programme, Martinelli said he’s feeling in good shape ahead of hosting Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“We're ready to go,” he said. “We play for Arsenal, we are proud of ourselves and we want to play every game and win all of them.

“We can't choose the games. We are going to go for it. We're ready and we're going to go there to win the game.”
