Interview

Mead: "It makes us more hungry"

After bagging a brace in our 5-0 win over Bristol City in the Adobe Women's FA Cup, Beth Mead spoke pitchside to reflect on the result.

After the full-time whistle, our number 9 discussed the team's performance, preparing for Manchester City at the weekend and whether she meant that second goal.

Here is everything she had to say:

on the enjoyable result and performance...

Yeah, it was nice. Nice to get on the scoresheet, nice to get lots of different goals from different goalscorers and a nice fluid performance. They’re not always easy games against these types of teams but really enjoyed being out there scoring lots of goals.

on her two goals tonight...

We’ve practised my first one a lot in training, that’s why [Mariona and I] ran up to each other and said ‘About time!’

But the second one I can’t really claim! It was meant to be a cross and I know I’ve scored a few of them in my career but every goal you’ll take and it looks good as well.

on Amanda Ilestedt's return...

So nice. She’s worked so hard to get back to the position of being in the squad and getting back on the pitch. It’s nice to see a different side: we’ve got a mum in the team now, who brings her baby in regularly and it’s nice to know that we’re not just footballers. We’re family members, we’re mums and we’re daughters, so it’s really nice to see her do both and get back on the football pitch again.

on setting up for a massive clash against City this weekend...

Yes, it’s a good thing about games coming thick and fast. You’ve got to dust yourself off and go again and we showed that tonight. Now, we’ve got to recover and again prep for the next big game against City on Sunday.

on whether the disappointment against Chelsea will motivate us further at the weekend...

I think we’re motivated, we were motivated to win the game, we fell short and we were really disappointed with that but it makes us more hungry and we’ve got to improve and got to try and beat the best and at the moment that was them and we’ve got to try and be the best that we can be to try and push them.
