Merino named men's Player of the Month for March

Mikel Merino celebrates scoring against Chelsea

Mikel Merino has been named our men’s Player of the Month winner for March.

The Spanish midfielder has excelled in his makeshift striking role since deputising for the injured Kai Havertz since February, and those efforts have been recognised by our supporters with 39% deeming him to be our star performer last month.

Declan Rice came second, with February’s victor Ethan Nwaneri finishing in third.

Having previously caught the eye in attack with a brace against Leicester City, Mikel took his goalscoring form in the month by grabbing one as well as an assist in our 7-1 thrashing of PSV Eindhoven during an excellent display by the Spaniard.

He followed that up with the winner against Chelsea with an improvised header to take his goal tally to six for the campaign, with his five in the league matching his best-ever career total - a figure he has since gone on to surpass thanks to his effort against Fulham on April 1.

His eye for goal also saw him net for Spain in their Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands as they moved into the last four as they attempt to retain their title.
