Arsene Wenger says Ray Parlour was popular among the Arsenal squad because people felt “they could follow him into the trenches”.
The legendary midfielder won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a League Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup during his 12 years at the club.
"He had a good, comprehensive attitude with all the players. That made him very popular"
Wenger was a keen admirer of Parlour - who celebrated his 43rd birthday this week - for his influence both on and off the pitch.
“He was a real team player and he gave everyone the impression that they could follow him into the trenches, that he would not let you down,” the manager told Arsenal Player.
“Off the pitch as well he had his own sense of humour. He had a good, comprehensive attitude with all the players. That made him very popular in the dressing room.
“Overall he was an underrated player in England. He showed that when he played in central midfield he was not only a runner, he was also a very good footballer.”
