Ahead of Sunday’s game at home to West Ham United in the Barclays Women’s Super League, we’ve sifted through the Opta Review Pack to unearth a number of the keys to our success this season.
Scoring goals has not been a problem for Renee Slegers’ Gunners this campaign and it’s no surprise - our 34 goals are the product of the best shot conversion rate in the league (20.6%). So, while we haven’t scored the most goals (Chelsea have 40), we have been the most efficient.
At the other end, we also have the joint most clean sheets, alongside Chelsea and Manchester United (nine).
Fitness and stamina have been vital to our success this season, as 24% of our goals have come in the final 15 minutes of matches, more than any other 15-minute period.
We love playing at Emirates Stadium and Meadow Park. With 22 goals at home, we have the joint best home goalscoring record in the league, alongside Manchester City. With four home goals conceded to City’s nine, we also have the best home goal difference (18).
“If you don’t shoot, you don’t score.” That’s the point Alessia Russo made after Emily Fox’s stunner against Tottenham Hotspur, and our Lioness has been practicing what she preaches. No-one has had more shots in the league than Alessia, who has taken 48 (23 on target, 16 off target, and nine blocked).
In terms of chance creation, Katie McCabe’s four assists have come courtesy of her league-leading 33 chances created.
Mariona Caldentey has also been pulling the strings, boasting more passes in the opposition half than any other player with 538 and a success rate of 82.3%.
