Our five most memorable north London derby moments

Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur

With the second north London derby of the season just around the corner, our Official Global Betting Partners, Betway, have picked out their five most memorable moments against Tottenham Hotspur.

5. Fabregas’ quickfire finish

Our list starts with a goal the television cameras almost missed as we hosted Tottenham at Emirates Stadium in 2009. With half-time approaching, Robin van Persie found the net at the near post to put us 1-0 up. However, it was the next goal that lives long in the memory.

With replays of the first goal still being shown on TV and fans inside the ground only just finishing their celebrations, Cesc Fabregas stole the ball straight from the Tottenham kick-off, nutmegged a defender and fired home from the edge of the box.

The stadium erupted in celebration, and things only got better from there as van Persie scored again in the second half to cap off a 3-0 win.

4. Sagna kickstarts comeback

We found ourselves 2-0 down at home to our rivals in 2012, but a goal from an unlikely scorer started our fightback.

Bacary Sagna only scored four league goals in his seven seasons playing for us, but he bagged a crucial one here as he met Mikel Arteta’s floated cross and fired a header into the top corner. Sagna immediately picked up the ball and took it to the centre circle for kick-off, and there was a sense the momentum had swung in the derby.

We scored four more times without reply, with goals from van Persie, Tomas Rosicky and two from Theo Walcott completing a famous comeback.

3. A nine-goal thriller

The 2004/05 season saw one of the most dramatic north London derbies ever as we triumphed 5-4 at White Hart Lane. Surprisingly, the game got off to a relatively slow start and was just 1-1 at half-time after Thierry Henry cancelled out a Tottenham opener.

The second half was all action, though, with seven goals in total as strikes from Lauren, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires earned us the three points. Vieira’s powerful run through the middle and composed finish was the pick of the bunch.

2. Henry’s epic solo strike

Thierry Henry scored arguably the best north London derby goal ever as we won riot at Highbury in November 2002.

Picking the ball up deep into his own half, the legendary Frenchman glided at full speed past numerous defenders to the edge of the opposition box before firing into the bottom corner with his left foot. He celebrated with the iconic knee slide that has since been immortalised with a bronze statue outside Emirates Stadium.

Henry’s strike opened the scoring in the 14th minute and was followed by goals from Ljungberg and Sylvain Wiltord as we romped to a 3-0 win on home turf.

1. ‘We won it at the Lane’

Our greatest north London Derby moment came in 2004, as the famous Invincibles side sealed the Premier League title at a 2-2 draw at the home stadium of our biggest rivals.

We went into this April clash at White Hart Lane knowing a point would be enough to crown us champions, and first-half goals from Vieira and Pires put the trophy within our grasp. A Tottenham goal at the hour mark and a late penalty saw the game finish 2-2, but Arsene Wenger’s all-conquering side had done enough to confirm their place as champions.

And, of course, the story didn’t end there as we avoided defeat in our four remaining league games to become the only Premier League team to go an entire season unbeaten.
