Pre-Match Report

Preview: Arsenal Women v Liverpool

Arsenal Women v Liverpool

We return to Barclays Women's Super League action when we host Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Saturday (17:30 kick-off).

Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, our focus remains on maintaining our fine domestic form ahead of the return European tie next Wednesday.

We have won our last four WSL matches and sit second in the table with six matches to play ahead of Saturday's clash.

Tickets for the game are still available, starting at £16 for adults and £8 for concessions.

REDS ON THE UP

Liverpool celebrate scoring against Manchester United

Liverpool are in good spirits themselves having reeled off six wins from their last seven games. That run includes victory over us in the FA Cup earlier this month, before they overcame Manchester United 3-1 in the WSL at Anfield last weekend.

The Reds are under relatively new management, with Amber Whiteley currently taking charge as interim manager after the exit of Matt Beard last month.

Whiteley has won all of her three matches as boss and her side sit sixth in the table heading into this weekend.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Olivia Smith of Liverpool

Olivia Smith has been handed a right-wing berth by Whiteley, demonstrating her quality consistently in recent weeks. The 20-year-old scored twice in last week's win over Manchester United and tops the goals chart for her side across the campaign, with seven in all competitions.

Smith became Canada's youngest-ever senior international when she made her debut aged 15 in 2019 and is now justifying the hype with her performances in England.

LAST TIME WE MET

Liverpool came out on top in that FA Cup clash between the two sides a couple of weeks ago, a Daphne van Domselaar own goal sending the visitors through to the semi-finals.

The reverse WSL fixture in December produced a different result, however, when we won 1-0 at St Helens Stadium. Alessia Russo's first-half strike was enough to earn us the victory, Katie McCabe's corner falling to the striker for a poacher's finish.

OTHER NOTABLE MEETINGS

One of our heaviest victories over Liverpool in recent seasons came in the 2021/22 FA Cup fifth round, when we won 4-0 at Prenton Park. Goals from Rhiannon Roberts, McCabe, Caitlin Foord and Kim Little ensured a comprehensive win that day.

We have generally enjoyed plenty of success over the Reds in the WSL, too, winning 10 of our last 11 league games against them. Vivianne Miedema and Foord were on the scoresheet when we beat them 2-0 on the road last season, while Little, Dominique Janssen, Miedema and a Beth Mead brace saw us win 5-1 at Prenton Park in March 2019.

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Slegers on Liverpool: "I think they've always been a very good team, a tough team to get through, but I think you can see there's a couple of players on their team now, and I think in general a confident team. They believe in what they're doing, and I also think they've gotten maximum rewards for the good things they've done in the last two games.

"We're definitely very aware of where they're at as a team and the threats they can pose on us."

Amber Whiteley of Liverpool

Whiteley: "It’s another big game and one we are looking forward to. We are expecting an improved Arsenal from that [cup] game. They are a very good side but we will be prepared, as we always are. We will go into the game clear on what we need to do to stop them but also clear as to what we need to do to try to hurt them as well.

"I have to say, the girls have been fantastic. We’ve got such a talented group and they want to be playing on these big stages against the best teams and the best players. I’m so pleased we’ve been able to show the strength and the quality that we have got in this team over the last three weeks."

TEAM NEWS

Lotte Wubben-Moy celebrates after the north London derby

Slegers provided an update on Van Domselaar and Lotte Wubben-Moy, both of whom missed the midweek trip to Madrid. While Lotte remains out of action, Daphne is fit again and could return between the posts. However, Laia Codina is a question mark for the game.

Going into their game with Manchester United, a bout of sickness in the Reds' camp saw Grace Fisk, Gemma Bonner, Ceri Holland and Leanne Kiernan all falling ill, but all are available for the trip to north London.

FACTS AND STATS

Alessia Russo celebrates scoring against Spurs

We have won 18 of our 24 WSL meetings with Liverpool, and are the only team in Women’s Super League history to hold more wins over a single opponent (19 vs Everton).

Arsenal v Chelsea is the only fixture that has been played more times (29) and seen more total goals scored (87) in WSL history than Arsenal v Liverpool (84 goals in 24 meetings).

We have lost just one of our last 11 WSL games at Emirates Stadium (W8 D2), winning each of their last three at the venue by an aggregate score of 14-0.

We have won our last five WSL home games while scoring 4+ goals in each victory (23 total goals), the longest such run ever by a team in a single season in the competition’s history.

Alessio Russo has scored 10 goals for the second WSL campaign in succession, becoming just the second Arsenal player to reach double figures for goals in multiple top-flight campaigns after Vivianne Miedema (four).
