Fresh from completing the double over Tottenham Hotspur this season, Renée Slegers reflected on this afternoon's victory at Emirates Stadium.
A 57,000-strong crowd were there to witness our 5-0 victory and our head coach shared her delight with the performance, our team's prolific scoring and what our January arrivals have added to the squad.
Here is everything she had to say:
on this afternoon's victory...
Yeah, I'm very happy with that. I think there's a lot of pressure on us. Every game we play in the WSL is important. And then with the crowd coming out and the North London Derby, so I think the way the girls managed it today is very good. We always go about clean sheets and defensive solidity. So I'm very happy with the clean sheet today as well.
on Emily Fox's spectacular goal...
I could visualise it! And of course, she's been practising her finishing as well in training. She's been doing well. And of course, she often contributes with her defensive qualities in our game and sets up really good attacks and crosses in the final third. But now she got on the end of it, which is great. And I think she's the 11th goalscorer for us this year. And it says something about the qualities that we have in the team.
on our squad's prolific scoring and defensive record since she took over...
Yes, I think I'm just in a luxury position because there are so many good players who play for Arsenal at the moment. We try to set up the team as well as possible and try to prime them in the best way we can during the week and ahead of the game. But yeah, credit to the girls. Yeah, I'm very happy about it. Of course, we want to score a lot of goals and of course, we want to keep clean sheets. But it's about what the girls bring in training and games. It's been very good.
on what our January signings have brought to the squad...
A new fire, a passion for football, happiness on the pitch, hard work. But then, of course, also qualities in their positions. So, Jenna has just been really good with her left foot on the left wing, can also play with the right foot, combines really well and understands positioning really well. And then I think Chloe, we knew her qualities. Of course, I think everyone's seen her play for England as well. She's a good 1v1 player, very effective in the final third with crosses and shots, but the part I'm most impressed with is the way she wants to work very hard in training.
on how special the 57,000-strong crowd was...
Yeah, it is. It was a real reality check before the game. You're still in the unknown. The game hasn't kicked off yet, but the whole crowd is out and they sing the song. Goosebumps. And I'm like, ’Is this where we're going with women's football?’ It's massive, I think, what Arsenal is doing to grow the game and the support we get. I'm very grateful to be part of it.
on the upcoming international break...
Well, I wish them all success for their games. They're all proud to play for the national teams and represent. So I wish them all the best. And then we have a couple of players at home and we're going to be really effective with the training that we have.
