Young Gun: Osman Kamara

Osman Kamara

Our Young Gun series gets to know the academy youngsters kicking off their careers at Sobha Realty Training Centre.

Osman Kamara spoke to us recently, and here's what he had to say about growing up in east London, watching Alexis Sanchez and earning his scholarship.

I grew up in Mile End, east London, where my love for football began by kicking a ball around with my dad and playing regularly at school. Growing up, I admired players like Ronaldo, Neymar, and Ronaldinho — the skilful, creative players who could mesmerise with their talent. I’d spend hours watching their highlights on YouTube, then head outside to try and replicate their moves. Being an Arsenal fan, I especially loved watching Alexis Sanchez. He was so entertaining, always delivering goals and electrifying performances.

My football journey truly began when my PE teacher noticed my talent and recommended me to join a Sunday League club called Senrab. I was just seven years old at the time. Senrab has a history of producing top talent, with players like Sol Campbell and Jermain Defoe coming through their ranks. While there, I played alongside Yusuf Akhamrich, and we made a great duo at that level. Yusuf eventually joined Spurs, and I got scouted by Arsenal, so things worked out well for both of us!

During my time at Senrab, I also trained with an organisation called CrownProElite, who helped me refine my skills and connected me with scouts. They invited Arsenal to watch one of my games, and after impressing them, I was offered a six-week trial. I made the most of that opportunity, playing well and earning my place at the club at just eight years old. Joining Arsenal felt like stepping into a dream, and I quickly bonded with players like Josh Nichols, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, and Harrison Dudziak, who joined shortly after me. It’s incredible that so many of us are still at the club today.

One of my standout moments at Hale End was during a tour in Menorca, where we faced Atletico Madrid. I scored a memorable goal, hitting the top corner from outside the box on my first touch. I still talk about it to this day!

Earning my scholarship in 2022 was another milestone in my career. I was hungry and in great form leading up to it, so achieving that goal was hugely rewarding.

When I progressed to the Sobha Realty Training Centre as a scholar, the highlight of my first year was our FA Youth Cup run to the final. I’ll never forget coming off the bench to score a late winner away at Newcastle in freezing conditions—it felt like something out of a film.

Then, in the next round against Watford, I came on at half-time with the team 2-0 down. I won a penalty to make it 2-1 and scored the equaliser in a 4-2 comeback victory. Although we couldn’t secure the trophy in the final, it was an unforgettable journey.

Signing my professional contract in the summer of 2024 was an incredible feeling. After a strong second season with the under-18s, where I scored nine goals and provided two assists in 14 league games – along with a couple of goals for the under-21s – I felt my confidence and belief grow. My parents were so proud, and knowing that the coaches believed in me meant everything.

This season has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Stepping up to the under-21s has been a big adjustment, and injuries have disrupted my rhythm, limiting my game time. But I’m staying focused, doing extra training, and working hard to be ready when my chance comes. I know I’ll deliver when I get a good run of games.

Seeing my teammates like Myles, Ethan, Maldini, Josh, and Ismeal make their first-team debuts has been so inspiring. We’ve been on this journey together for years, and their success has lit a fire in me to be next. It’s clear that Arsenal provides a great pathway for young players, and I’m determined to take my opportunity when it comes.

If I were to describe my playing style, I’d say I’m a direct, fast and skilful winger. I’m unpredictable, strong in one v one situations, and always looking to give defenders something to worry about.
