Renee hoping for more League Cup success

Renee Slegers has fond memories of our involvement in last season’s Women's League Cup, as we beat Chelsea in the final at Molineux Stadium.

Ahead of our entry into the competition this season with Wednesday’s trip to Crawley to face Brighton & Hove Albion in the quarter-finals, she’s looking for the team to create more memories.

“I was with the team last year, I think we played a really good game and what I take from it mostly was the way we managed the game over 20 minutes; we start the game and finish the game, a lot of players involved but mostly how persistent we were, how we overcame difficult moments in the game,” she said in her pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“So, I think it was certainly a great performance by the team and I’m very happy with that and very happy that we’re still competing in all four competitions at the moment.”

We’ve already played Brighton once in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season, winning 5-0 at Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Beth Mead, Caitlin Foord, Frida Maanum, Lina Hurtig and Alessia Russo.

Now, we go into Wednesday’s game off the back of another 5-0 success.

“They have a very strong identity,” Renee said, discussing the Seagulls, who are fifth in the WSL with 17 points from 11 games. “I think they’re very persistent with their style of play and when they do it well they do it really well, so it’s going to put a challenge on us.

“They’ll press us high and we’ll try to play out of that pressure, but also they invest a lot of numbers and have a particular set-up in the way they build and we’ll have to soak up that pressure so it’s going to be an interesting challenge.

“They’ve changed a little bit, not in possession in the way they’ve been playing, but we’ve seen them change what they do out of possession, so in that sense it’s going to be a little bit different from the other game [against them].”
