Thomas Partey netted his fourth goal of the season in our 1-1 draw with Brentford, then immediately turned his attentions to Wednesday night’s Champions League match in Madrid.
Partey played at right back against Brentford on Saturday, but that didn’t stop him bursting forward on the counter-attack to slam Declan Rice’s pass high into the net, after David Raya had started the move after defending a Brentford corner.
“It’s something that we've been doing for a while now,” the Ghanaian said about the goal. “I'm lucky to be at that position at that time. But normally we have a lot of quick players who are always on the counter. I think it's just something that we always do.
“Sometimes it's the best part of the game to score. And I'm really happy to have a goal. Every player on the pitch wants to score from the back. It's a great one for me personally to keep improving.”
As soon as the final whistle blew, Partey started to look ahead to Wednesday, and our Champions League quarter-final second leg match against Real Madrid.
We take a 3-0 lead to the Spanish capital, and as someone who spent seven years with Real’s neighbours Atletico, he knows all about dealing with the Bernabeu atmosphere.
“I think we've experienced this many times when we play here and I think it's not going to be something different,” he said. “We just have to be confident with the ball and try to play our game.
“We all know what we have to do. We have to go there with the mentality to win. We want to win every game. And I think we have to play our game, be confident with the ball and also try to find our weaknesses and keep attacking them.”
